Your fall checklist for home care
Three things NY families can check this fall so home care keeps running smoothly.

Hi there,
If someone you love gets home care through Medicaid, this fall brings some mail worth opening, a respiratory season worth planning for, and a good moment to look at the house with fresh eyes. None of it needs to be stressful. Here is what we would do in your shoes.

Open every letter from NY State of Health |
|
| New federal rules are changing parts of Medicaid. NY State of Health says it will write to members by September 30 if a change applies to them, and some adults aged 19 to 64 will have new work rules from January 1, 2027. Many people are exempt, including anyone 65 or older, people enrolled with a disability, and family caregivers of a person with a disability. |

What to do |

 | Check that NY State of Health (or your county social services office, if you enrolled there) has your current address, phone and email. | | Open every notice, text or call from NY State of Health or your health plan, and keep them together in one folder. | | If you are a family caregiver, keep care paperwork handy. You may be asked to show it at renewal. | | Not sure what a letter means? Call us and we will help you read it and find the right office to call. |

Plan ahead for flu, RSV and COVID season |
|
| On September 10 the New York State and New York City Health Departments endorsed this season's respiratory virus immunization recommendations. Older adults and people with heart, lung or other long-term conditions are at higher risk. |

What to do |
|
| Ask your loved one's doctor or pharmacist which vaccines are right for them this season. | | Write a one-page sick-day plan: medications, doctor's number, and who to call first. | | Tell your aide or care coordinator about new symptoms early, not at the end of the week. |

Date every envelope
Write the day it arrived on each letter before you file it. If you ever need to call about one, you'll know exactly which notice you mean.

Take a five-minute walk for fall hazards |
|
| Falls Prevention Awareness Week ran September 21 to 25. Most falls happen at home, and most of the fixes are small. |

What to do |
|
| Clear walkways of cords and clutter, and secure loose rugs. | | Add night lights on the route from the bedroom to the bathroom. | | Ask about grab bars in the bathroom and rails on the stairs. | | Ask the doctor whether any medication causes dizziness. |
